Sleep Apnea Treatment in Dubbo
Do you ever wake up in the middle of the night gasping for air? Or, have you noticed a partner snoring loudly? Both are a symptom of sleep apnea, which can come with a host of health problems when not properly addressed.
Types of Sleep Apnea
Sleep apnea is closely associated with snoring, where people who suffer from the disorder repeatedly stop breathing throughout the night. Breathing pauses can last anywhere from a few seconds to minutes, sometimes occurring 30 times or more each hour.
A very common type of sleep apnea, this condition occurs when your tongue and other soft tissue in the mouth collapse and are sucked up against the back of your throat, effectively blocking your airway, stopping good oxygen flow. This type of apnea may be helped by wearing a custom-fit dental splint. Please note, a sleep study may be required before the splint can be created.
In this type of sleep apnea, your airway is not blocked. Rather, your brain fails to signal to your muscles to breathe, usually as a result of instability in your respiratory control centre. This type of sleep apnea may require the use of a CPAP machine, which directs air into your lungs as you sleep.
Sleep Apnea Treatment
At Delroy Park Dental Care, we have worked with a number of patients who have had success wearing custom-fit mouthguards during sleep. These mouthguards work by moving the jaw slightly forward, which makes it difficult for the airway to become blocked.
